Boo! Everyone is out and about on Halloween night, including spooky decorations and noises. Here are some tips for keeping your pets from being effected by these Halloween occurrences.

  1. Keep the Treats out of Reach

Chocolate can be extremely dangerous to cats and dogs. Be sure to keep the bowl of candies where they cannot reach them, even wrapped candy bars can be easily opened by the teeth of curious pups! If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately (1)

  2. Be Mindful of Pumpkins

Be sure that Pumpkins, especially carved ones, are out of reach of pets. If ingested, raw pumpkin can cause Gastrointestinal upset. Additionally carved pumpkins tend to mold quickly, “some types of mold produce mycotoxins that can cause neurologic problems in dogs and cats.”(2)

  3. Choose Pet Costumes Wisely

Many of us love to dress up pets in costume around this holiday. (1)If you do, be sure your pet is accepting and comfortable in said costume. Check off that the costume ..

    • does not restrict their movement or ability to breathe

    • does not have any small, dangling pieces that can be a choking hazard

    • does not cause your pet any stress

    • is not too tight or too loose fitting

  4. Keep Pets in a Safe Place on Halloween Night

It is likely that all of the action and noise of visitors at the front door can startle your cat or dog. “Putting your dog or cat in a secure crate or room away from the front door will reduce stress and prevent them from darting outside into the night.” (2) Additionally, do not leave your pet outside in the yard on this night either. Many pranksters, young children and strangers are roaming the streets on this night, keep your pet indoors to avoid any gates being opened or pet thieves! Terrifying!
