4 Reasons Your Dog Could Be Itching

“There are many reasons your dog may be itchy. Many veterinarians believe it’s best to find the cause of the itch sooner rather than later. While the occasional scratch can be normal for dogs, frequent scratching could indicate a medical condition that may get worse over time. (1)” In this blog post we’ll go over some of the reasons your dog could be expressing these behaviors and how to soothe the itch!

1) Fleas / Flea Allergies

Fleas are one of the most common causes of itching in dogs. Fleas can jump from one dog to another at the park, or when you visit a new place. “Flea bites can create extremely itchy areas on your dog. They can be found anywhere on the body, but are most common at the hind legs, tail base, and rear end. Just because you don’t see any fleas on your dog does not mean they aren’t there – keep in mind that a bite from a single flea can cause an allergic itch in your dog.”(1)

2) Environmental / Seasonal Allergies)

The changing in seasons and environment is known to cause reactions in dogs - Much like us as humans when spring arrives and the itchy eyes saga begins. “Also called allergic dermatitis, this is often caused by an allergen from the environment, such as from pollen, dander, and plants, so it can be seasonal.(2)”

3) Food / Food Allergies

Dogs can also be sensitive to certain foods without our knowledge. “Some dogs are allergic to common dog food ingredients such as beef, chicken, and dairy products. Food allergies in dogs can lead to signs of allergic itch around the paws, face, armpits, and belly.(1)”

“Food allergies are often seen in dogs with year-round itching, and allergic reactions can be tested through a diet trial.(2)” Ask your vet to make a plan for starting you dog on a diet trial.

4) Bacterial or fungal infections

Dogs are always finding their way into unknown things inside and outside the home, not limiting them from catching a bacterial infection. “Bacterial or fungal infections are a common cause of pruritus, with other symptoms including oozing, inflamed skin, a strong stench, and hair loss. To determine if this is the cause, “the vet will look for mites or infections from bacteria or fungus, such as ringworm.(2)”
